Michael McArthur(CSO, Co-Founder) is the Professor of Nanomedicine at the Norwich School of Medicine, UEA. He is a Molecular Microbiologist with over 20 years experience of academic and biotechnology research. His defining scientific interest is how the control of bacterial genes can be used to create new antibacterials. He leads multidisciplinary research teams with expertise in: molecular biology, microbiology, chemistry, biophysical characterisation and formulation. Michael gained his PhD from University of Cambridge and has held academic positions in the EU (John Innes Centre, ICMB in Crete) and University of Washington, Seattle. Ludovic holds key senior faculty positions at the SANGER institute as well as the University of Cambridge and coordinates and manages large-scale stem cell production activities and disease research grants for multiple bodies including ERC, MRC, Wellcome Trust and NIHR. The Vallier laboratory studies mechanisms controlling the differentiation of pluripotent cells into pancreas and liver cell types. They have advanced the state of the art regarding the use of hIPSC as an in vitro model of development. This has included the development of a platform technology enabling the controlled differentiation of human stem cells into specific endodermal cell types including pancreas and liver progenitors. He has created the Cambridge NIHR BRC hIPSC core facility and based on this experience, he became responsible for the derivation part of the. He is now coordinating this large scale HIPSCI project which aims to derive hIPSC lines from 1500 patients within the Sanger Institute and also with institutions worldwide such as the NIH. Ludovic has published several high impact factor articles on hIPSCs and their use for modelling liver diseases and cell based therapy. He has also developed a strong interest in pancreatic development by establishing robust protocols of differentiation to generate homogenous population of beta-like cells.

He is also Vice President and President Elect of the World Glaucoma Association, the largest glaucoma organisation in the world. Prof. Martin’s research interests include the mechanisms of retinal ganglion cell death in glaucoma and he is developing neuroprotection strategies to slow the progression of glaucomatous visual loss, and ultimately to restore vision. Keith Martin graduated in Neuroscience from Cambridge University in 1990 and from Oxford University Clinical School in 1993. He trained in General Medicine and Neurology at the Hammersmith Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery in London and the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. His Higher Specialist Training in Ophthalmology was undertaken in Cambridge before three years of Research and Clinical Fellowship Training in glaucoma with Harry Quigley at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore and with Prof. Peng Khaw at the Institute of Ophthalmology, UCL. His research group was the first to demonstrate that increased expression of Brain-Derived neurotrophic Factor through AAV-medicated gene therapy demonstrated a protective effect on RGC loss in a model of glaucoma.
