Anyone who’s ever visited the Yosemite National Park will find this book a treasure trove of descriptions, information and evocations of the fabled beauty of this amazing piece of heaven on earth! The Yosemite by John Muir was published in 1912. Born in Scotland, England, this world-famous conservationist was a multi-talented genius. He was a geologist, naturalist, engineer, writer, botanist and a passionate and prolific writer on the preservation of the natural environment. His family migrated to America when he was just a few years old, the third of eight boisterous children. He went on to study chemistry at the University of Wisconsin, and had a moment of epiphany when a friend of his plucked a flower from a tree on campus to explain its botanical structure. An unfortunate accident almost cost him his eyesight and it was while he was confined to a darkened room to convalesce that he rediscovered his passion for nature and beauty. From 1889 onwards, he was associated closely with the creation of the Yosemite National Park which happened a year later. He later founded the Sierra Club to encourage conservation and protection of this magnificent landscape. The book is sheer reading pleasure, especially when it’s read aloud. John Muir’s language is poetic and lyrical, creating wonderful word pictures of the Yosemite. Muir has acquired almost iconic status in the annals of this great national park and his statue adorns a prominent place there. His love of the outdoors is reflected in his feeling of joy and exhilaration as he describes the towering mountain ranges, the sparkling waterfalls and the shadowy valleys. He was also a keen social scientist who felt that grave injustice had been done to the Native Americans by pushing them further and further away from their hereditary lands. The Yosemite is indeed a great addition to your bookshelf!

This timeless tale by Robert Louis Stevenson follows the life of David Balfour who leaves his home in Scotland after the death of his parents. First he meets his uncle for the first time in his life. His uncle is a very mean person who, at first, tried to kill David by devious means but then got him kidnapped onto a slave ship. In the ship, David makes friends with a Scottish rebel and together they successfully defeat the ship’s crew. The rebel, Alan, cherishes a dream to overthrow the British rulers of Scotland. Soon after the shipwreck, the two escaped but were later charged for being accomplices in the murder of a British supporter by the name of Colin Campbell. Although the novel’s adventures get a kick-start by this kidnapping, it is true that the hero of the story spends very little time as a captive. The character of Alan is very important as without his friendship the story would have ended very quickly. David would have been forced into slavery or would have escaped and met a poor fate due to starvation and want of money. On the contrary, David enters into new adventures with Alan on the ship itself. But after being charged with the grave crime of murder, readers are forced to ask two pertinent questions – Will these two escape from the hands of the British soldiers? Will David ever confront his sly uncle and fight to get back his inheritance? This is a very exciting and adventure filled story and all readers, old or young, will like the way the novel slowly unfolds. The setting of the story is very beautiful and there are vivid descriptions of the woods, waterfalls and streams which they jump over. The story is set in 1751 and the author has successfully narrated the story keeping in mind the history of the time. If you love adventure stories then you simply cannot ignore this fast-moving adventure which promises to keep the reader engrossed from start-to-finish.

The freedom it has given us to live our dreams and be in control of our day and time is amazing. Shaykh Taha Karaan is a Shafi’i researcher born in Cape Town, South Africa to a family eminent in both its maternal and fatherly ancestry for Islamic grant. His dad, Shaykh Yusuf Karaan, is one of the most established and most recognized Islamic researchers in the Cape. Shaykh Yusuf – well known for his interpretation of a large portion of Shaykh al-Hadith Mawlana Muhammad Zakariyya al-Kandhlawi’s original works – right now sits as the boss Magistrate for Islamic Civil Matters in the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC). Shaykh Taha Karaan finished his Qur’anic remembrance in one year at the Waterfall Islamic Institute, the most seasoned Islamic theological college in South Africa.
