The purpose of this undergraduate course is to introduce fundamental techniques and viewpoints for the design and the analysis of efficient computer algorithms, and to study important specific algorithms. The course relies heavily on mathematics and mathematical thinking in two ways: first as a way of proving properties about particular algorithms such as termination, and correctness; and second, as a way of establishing bounds on the worst case (or average case) use of some resource, usually time, by a specific algorithm. The course covers some randomized algorithms as well as deterministic algorithms.

The Stories Podcast

  • Publisher: The Stories Podcast
  • Total Episodes: 4

The “story” format seems to be appearing everywhere now hint hint Instagram, Facebook Messenger & of course Snapchat. What is it that makes the format work so well? Connection — Most stories are filmed with the front facing camera creating a personal 1-on-1 feel between the creator and the viewer. Time Limit — 10 seconds sounds like a really short time.. it’s not. It is just long enough to make a point and deliver value & no more. Keeping the viewers attention and focus. Vertical — First off I love the vertical angle for a number of reasons but it just feels right, in terms of stories it works wonders and changes the way the story is told resulting in this unique media. Ordering — As stories are shown from the oldest to newest clip you get to watch moments unfold which is a big change from algorithmic/time based feeds like Twitter which chop up messages designed to be consumed in ascending order. It seems like more and more people are creating stories with value — however the content itself is different for each creator, but which style is the most engaging? The aim of this podcast is to find an answer to this question!

Project HOPE

  • Publisher: NASA APPEL
  • Total Episodes: 5

A young team of engineers had one year and a lot to learn before getting their rocket off the ground. Project Hands-On Learning Experience (HOPE) offered a team of young engineers the opportunity to design, develop, build and launch a suborbital flight project within one year. The first team selected for Project HOPE was the Terrain-Relative Navigation and Employee Development (TRaiNED) project from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Its mission built upon a 2006 initial development test conducted on a sounding rocket flight. The previous flight had collected analog ground imagery during the descent portion of the rocket’s trajectory and inertial measurement unit (IMU) and GPS data from launch to landing in order to further develop terrain-relative navigation computer algorithms. The TRaiNED project expanded on the initial mission to include exo-atmospheric imagery in addition to descent imagery. TRaiNED was part of JPL’s Phaeton Early Career Hire Development Program. The concept for HOPE originated with a request in 2006 by then-NASA Chief Engineer Chris Scolese to find creative ways of giving young NASA employees the skills needed to lead future projects and programs. The result was a collaboration between the Academy of Program/Project & Engineering Leadership and the Science Mission Directorate to stand up a yearlong training program for young engineers.
